Churches

Duomo of Savona

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, known as Savona Cathedral, was built in 1605 to replace the old building destroyed by Andrea Doria after the occupation of the city by the Genoese. The interior consists of three naves and the walls are decorated with valuable paintings and sculptures. The tabernacle in the shape of a small temple is the work of the Jesuit Grassi, who designed it based around the one built in the Gesù Church in Rome.

Cappella Sistina - Savona

The Sistine Chapel in Savona was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV based on the Roman model and intended as a funerary chapel for his parents, Leonardo Della Rovere and Luchina Monteleone. It is part of the Cathedral’s Monumental Complex, together with the Cathedral, the Treasury Museum and the Apartment of Pope Pius VII. The main façade is in the Gothic style, the interior of the chapel is now frescoed in the Rococo style and the most important decorations in the chapel were entrusted to the D’Aria brothers, while the frescoes were completed by Mazone. The Sistine Chapel is, due to its historical value, definitely a place to visit to get to know and understand the history of Savona, the City of the Two Popes.

Collegiata of San Giovanni Battista in Finale Ligure

Considered one of the most beautiful churches in the Savona area, its construction was initially attributed to Bernini, but has since been disproved. It was in fact the work of local artists, scholars and followers of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was started in 1619 and the work took 55 years. The interior is characterised by ornaments in a completely Baroque style, however, softened by classical references that makes the ambience more harmonious.

Monumental Complex of Santa Caterina in Finalborgo

It was founded in 1359 by the Marchesi del Carretto, who wanted a unique monumental place for their family to be buried, asserting their power and influence. The church was dedicated to St Catherine, and underwent profound transformations over the years. It was built with Finale stone, and consisted of three naves and three apses. From Piazza di Santa Caterina, you can admire the Gothic arcades, the tower, and the two wonderful cloisters from the Renaissance period.

San Biagio of Finalborgo

Built in the Middle Ages, very little evidence of the structure from that period remains today, namely the apse and the neo-Gothic bell tower. The church was renovated in the Baroque style in 1633 by the architect Andrea Storace. In the nave you can see the Mausoleum, which comes from St Catherine’s, and still contains valuable pieces of art belonging to the Carrettesque Prelates.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Misericordia in Savona

Located 7 km outside the centre of Savona, at Santuario, it is a typical example of Genoese Mannerism. The altar was designed by the great Bernini, and the interior contains numerous works of art, including one by Domenichino.
